[Which, ultimately, doesn't take very long at all. Frisk waits only for the ringing to stop, replaced by the sound of buffeting rain, to speak in a quick and clipped voice.]

I found it.

Okay. Now repeat after me. The incantations are short, but pronunciation is key.

Beleuchten.

[The word reverberates when she says it; drowns out the word that should have translated into Frisk's native tongue with an echo. A sign someone's deliberately speaking in a different language. It will probably take a few tries to get it right, but Rin works with them patiently.

If they're holding the dagger when they succeed, it will be plainly obvious they've done it. The blade will alight with a hum of energy, an aura of white light that tightly hugs the metal edges, somehow making them seem sharper than they really are.]

[Beleuchten.]

[For Frisk, who's spent the better part of a year learning a language dead to the human world (and nearly all of the monster world), finding the right sounds on their tongue isn't horribly difficult. Takes practice, of course, but Rin is patient with them - certainly a touch more patient than they are with themself, under the pressing deadline.]

[When they get it right, the dagger very nearly clatters from their grasp. They're startled by the light, expecting it to burn, but - it doesn't. It's a warm glow that swallows the glint of purple on the metal blade, scattering across the two children like white sunlight.]

[A sharp intake of breath is the only indication of their surprise over the line. Frisk turns the hilt in their palm, quietly. Then their thumb hits the button for speakerphone and they hand it to Chara. Once it's freed, their hand steadies the other by the wrist, and they hold the blade out in front of them studiously.]

It works.

Quite well, might I add.

[Chara's voice, slightly closer than Frisk's own, at the moment. They're watching with interest, almost surprised that their Partner didn't wind up dropping the weapon with the suddenness of it actually working as Rin had planned.

Heaven knows they'd dropped their own, the first time Henry's runes had been activated.]

What's the second incantation?
heritrix: (two)

[personal profile] heritrix 2016-10-02 07:21 am (UTC)(link)
Good work.

[Ah, and it's good to hear your voice too, Chara. Unseen from the other end of the phone, Rin smiles briefly before continuing.]

Chara, hold the dagger while Frisk practices this one.

Unless you overuse it and drain the magical energy in the blade, you should be able to utilize the first spell multiple times. But consider this second spell for an emergency only. Holding it while saying the incantation will unleash all of the mana I've stored in the dagger at once, meaning there's no do-overs.

[No using the first spell again, too, which Rin would find more useful for the average Shadow and opening altar doors, on the off chance they need to. So obviously, even as a test, they won't want to be holding the dagger when practicing the second word.

Rin wait, both to make sure they understand this, and for someone to give her the go ahead once the blade has switched hands.]

[There's a slight delay between her instructions and Frisk's wordless compliance - a few moments of time that Frisk uses to test the weight, the grip and the balance. They step away from Chara and sweep the blade in a slow arc. Diagonal, top to bottom. The best directional momentum to keep their eyes free from dust --]

[Anyway, it seems good. The hilt flips in their hand, blade lying flat against their wrist and forearm, as they pass it off to Chara hilt-first. They have no aversion to the idea. Frisk imagines their Partner would like to test the feel of it, too.]

[But just for good measure, they hike up the hem of their sweater and pull their butterfly-patterned knife free with a soft rasp of metal over leather. Couldn't hurt to practice with a perfectly un-enchanted version. Once they're ready, they give Chara a nod, twitching a gesture towards the phone with the tip of their blade.]

[It's a blade they've seen before; a reassuring thought, when Frisk had initially collected it up in Rin's room. As such, they don't see a reason not to take it- trusting enough that Rin has no ill intent (and even if she had, would now be the time to reveal it?)- giving it a short swing in a motion identical to the one Frisk had just thrown.

To keep their eyes free from dust.

It has a good weight to it.]

They're ready when you are.

[Synchronized as any pair of Stephen King children as ever, aren't you two?

Lightning cracks behind her, and Rin waits for the low rumble of thunder to pass; wipes rain from her eyes and adjusts her ruined top so the pelting sting isn't against the burn on her back. Itchy. Switching the phone to her other ear, Rin imagines the feel of her father's Azoth Dagger in her hand; the first time she successfully used it.

Like the first one, it's a spell so simple that, so long as there's magical energy stored in the dagger, even a non-mage can do it. Release. Let go..]

Läßt.

[This one should be easier, the only trick to it to being the clipped German vowel, and double s. Phonetically, it sounds a lot like lesst.]

[There's more reaction to the rumbling thunder than anything else: a twitch of Frisk's pupils toward the phone and a subtle tightening of their mouth. But they say nothing. Just look forward again, knife sliding to point outwards in front of them, and they listen.]

[Läßt.]

[They inhale and say it. It comes out like lesss, followed immediately by a soft noise of frustration. Another shot, and they're closer, but still no dice.]

[It's kind of funny. Detached from all the danger and the very real possibility that Frisk and Chara are going to lose friends today, this sort of thing is... really cool. And Rin must know better than anyone how fun this would be, how much fascination Frisk would find in this jeweled dagger, if the circumstances allowed.]

[They don't.]

Läßt.

[If it were anything like what they shared, when Rin showed Frisk gem magecraft on their birthday, it'd be pretty special indeed. In fact, that's part of why contacted Frisk over Chara. They shared some of that fascination, that enthusiasm. Rin has no doubt Chara would be as dedicated, but if there was any trace of herself left behind in Frisk, she thought just maybe they'd be well suited for this.

She's glad to be proven right. Hearing the incantation come out correctly, Rin raises her head from where she had unknowingly rested it against the bars of her cage.]

That time you got it right. Remember to say it just like that, and you'll be fine if you need it.

[There's a gentle exhale of air from the other side of the line. Not a laugh, but something proud.]

I have to praise you, Frisk. You're a quick study.

[It's kind of funny. Detached from all the danger and the very real possibility that Frisk and Chara are going to lose friends today, Chara's the one who straightens at Rin's praise, the smile curving across their lips more genuine than anything else they've been able to provide this morning. If in the company of anyone else, perhaps they wouldn't be so open.

As it is, their pride is- obvious.]

They always have been.

[They wouldn't resent Rin picking Frisk over them even if the thought had crossed their mind. It's a valuable protection; an additional insurance that, despite anything else, Frisk will make it through today, even if no one else does.

It's a small compensation. But they'll take it.]

[...]

[Chara's the one who straightens at Rin's praise, while Frisk wordlessly slides their knife home into the black leather sheath. One hand reaches out palm-up, requesting the jeweled dagger back.]

[They wonder what kind of person it makes them, that there's a little flame of warmth in their middle at the pride in Rin's and Chara's tones. They don't feel very proud of themself for the way the hilt folds into their fingers with practiced ease or the powerful taste of the incantations on their tongue. But neither is there shame, where the butterfly-pin judgment of a cyan glow might bear down on the choices they've made. None of that matters to them.]

[Just a little flame of warmth, that they try not to let stir in their SOUL. Better to do. Frisk will make it through today, but it's not themself they're worried about.]

Thank you. We'll be careful. I promise.
[they think they understand why sans dislikes promises, now; which is precisely why they have to keep making them.]
... Chara. Let's find the others.
heritrix: (better than you)

[personal profile] heritrix 2016-10-04 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
[I promise.

It's a bit too late to pretend like she doesn't care. Several weeks too late, in fact, but even if it weren't, Rin doesn't think she would bother. She won't worry, either. Her friendship with Chara was born out of how surprisingly competent she found the child; Frisk from the careful thought they put into each of their actions. They both have flaws, but they make up for each other's weaknesses in many ways too.

And maybe she's stalled them just enough that the plans Masaomi said he's trying to put together will pull them in, before they can get too far ahead.]

Reading ahead in the script, huh? That's fine. It saves me from having to say something so cheesy.

But a promise is a promise, and just because I didn't ask it of you doesn't mean I won't hold you to it now that it's out there.

See you soon.
