[Emergency Notification]
To: All Users
From: Colin Starfury
Subject: Ozuma's missing
--------------------------------------------------------
URGENT ANNOUNCEMENT: The following is an automated message.
Nature of Emergency: Newcomers, and no sign of Ozuma. Possible mental manipulation.
We've got confirmed newcomers in the altar room, and they're reporting that Ozuma isn't there. They're also reporting seeing memories that aren't their own.
I think we've got Queenly shenanigans in play. Can we get a strike team to the Altar Room, in case we're going to get a follow up visit by shadows?

If the Altar Room falls, we've lost. The Altar room is our top priority. The fact that he's not there means that there's trouble of some sort there. Once we've secured the altar room again, we can work to track him down.
Sans is right, he's got a phone. We can find him pretty easily with that.

[She just knows it will be taken care of, and you have to multitask, especially with situations like these. ...Also, she's not sure if she's disturbed or pleased these phones have trackers. It's smart, but ugh. More weird features. Still, might save their butt in this instance.]
Finding him can't be that easy, can it? If something can make him vanish, it's not likely he's just in another room waiting for us.
[Watch that be exactly what it is.]

I'm not counting on that, but it's the first avenue I'm going to pursue.
I'm not going to make further plans without a sitrep though. Running in blind means a higher chance of death.
1/2
What does he think she's suggesting here? Sending everyone in pursuit aimlessly? Quit putting words in my mouth, she types, before she can think better of it.]

Only an idiot would.
Let us know how that search pans out. It's annoying to be kept in the dark.
no subject
You busy? I could give you a couple of good places to go looking for him if you wanted to check his usual haunts.
no subject
That's more like it! Give me a list, and I'll start straight away.
no subject
Otherwise, I've seen him in the Library before. I don't visit there nearly as often as I should, but he has been there often enough.
You might also check the bridge between the towers. It's commonly traveled, but he's been there several times too.
no subject
Consider it done.
But why do you think he's hiding? That seems out of character, for a guardian.
no subject
That memory we all saw? I'd bet good money it was Ozuma's.
no subject
[There he goes, making her feel like he thinks she's stupid again. Or maybe she's being insensitive? She thought it was obvious that was Ozuma... Rin can't say how, but she felt some of the things that man (for it was definitely a man, and a horned one as well; the flickering shadows on the ground cast by the flames had shown that) in the memory felt. Felt his desperation to save that girl, and his anger at the suffering of the villagers, betrayed by their Queen. And something about a book...]
But if it's a memory, it's past stuff. He's really old now so he should be over it.
And if he's not, it should motivate him not to fail again. Willingly leaving us because he feels bad just gives the Queen what she wants.
If there's anything that memory's convinced me of, it's that he doesn't want that.

Anyway, it's not a perfect theory. It's just an easy one using bare bones information.
But did it occur to you that he could be scared? Real fear doesn't respond to anything but the most primal of logic.
"This is a threat. Can I beat it? No. Can I run? Okay. Time to run."
Fight or flight. And judging by what we know of the queen, what we've experienced... I'm guessing that his death was not a pleasant one. Not something he'd want to experience again.
In a perfect world, you would be right. But people don't just get over things like this. Are you familiar with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder?
Of course, all of this assumes that HIDING is what's happening. If he's not hiding, if something happens to him, I can't imagine we'll find him anywhere easy to get to.

Though I don't know who you are.
[She's pretty bad at this technology thing, okay. God, how do you type so fast? If this were a typewriter she'd have no problem, but her fingers keep hitting multiple keys and messing up words. Her replies will inevitably take a little longer than his, each time.]
PTSD? No, I'm not familiar with it.
[Despite the Western influences her family has incorporated into their lifestyle, she is born and raised in Japan, after all; a country's that notoriously bad at handling mental health issues. Disconnected with her own self, she's never have reason to approach any subject like it. Which is sad in a way, because if she knew the symptoms, she would definitely recognize them in someone precious to her. Though it's debatable if it would even change her answer.]
I don't see what that has to do with anything, either way.
There's no saying that WAS his death, only that it was a bad memory. Even if it were, his end came and went a long time ago. That's plenty of time to move on, especially when there's bigger fish to fry.
[All of this should make it obvious that no, she has not considered Ozuma was scared. Until he mentioned it, it was the farthest thing from her mind.]
No theory is without merit, still, at this moment. You cover the ground thinking he's hiding, I'll consider the possibilities of him being kidnapped.
Whatever the cause behind his disappearance doesn't change the fact we need to find him, first thing.
no subject
[He doesn't need to type at all, his mental link with his systems basically mean he can communicate at the speed of thought. He also delights in the fact that she doesn't know who he is, so she's bound to get a few more surprises...]
For my line of thinking... A machine can only take so much damage before it breaks down completely. Going by what we've seen in this castle, I don't think things got better for them after that. If there was much opportunity for it to.
But that's beside the point.
We definitely need to find him either way. You cover your ground, I'll cover mine. I'll keep you updated if I find anything.
Check the library. It's a ways from here, and my attention is going to be divided for the short term.

Same, I'm sure.
[His description makes a little more sense to her, but not enough to be up to snuff. If Ozuma is hiding, she'll concede and admit he's right, certainly. But it won't be without disappointment. If he needed a break any other time, it'd be one thing, but newcomers have come today, and his presence here is what protects everyone. If he's ditched because he feels bad, to Rin he's a sham of a guardian. She would not easily rely on him ever again.
It's only because of the position he holds. First thing when she came here, everyone was all "talk to Ozuma", or "Ozuma can help you with that", and so on. If it were anyone else, considering almost everyone here has been roped in without consent, she'd be more forgiving. With him, it's just bad form. But she doesn't like thinking of people like that, so until proven otherwise she's going to continue her assumption that he's been taken.]
I'll report to you at least every two hours, or sooner if I find something.
no subject
Affirmative. Good hunting, then.
July 3
I found a bedroll tidied away. Ozuma would be the only one who could sleep out here, but it doesn't look like he did last night.
There's some trinkets scattered near the same area, as well, like they were knocked over. Either he left in a hurry, or there was a struggle.
[Rin leans towards a struggle, but objectively either theory still stands with this little to go off of.
Her other check-ins, when they come in, are efficient: to the point and business-like, not wasting time with pointless details. A list of the rooms she checked, without finding anything. The final check-in of the night states she will space her messages to every six hours, unless finding other evidence.
So it continues. She re-checks certain areas, Ozuma's particular haunts that Colin listed most often. But it's starting to look like the trail has gone cold, aside from the site in the altar room. Rin tells him as much in one check-in, late on July 5, but that starting the next day she'll be trying something else.]
July 7
i fond a lead
[It's a message off-schedule from the six hour check-in times, among other things.]

hold on
[She's actually looking right at them, albeit from a safe distance clear in another room, and through the eyes of her tiny familiar. Still, it's not the kind of time to worry about sending perfect texts. They don't attack it or come after her at all (which is another part of the weird), but Rin opts to retreat to a safer location anyways before going in-depth. Recalling her amethyst bird, she doesn't respond until she's back in a safe area.]
Okay. I had my familiars scout out other places for me, the last two days. I have them trained to avoid Shadows, so it wasn't strange there were a few areas they'd skip.
But since they've started, there's two areas they've consistently not been able to report back to me on, despite the fact I've sent them several times: the spiral staircase, and that small tower across from the bridge.

I've seen clusters of shadows before, but it's normally in queen-held areas.
It's concerning, definitely. Can you tell me what they're doing? What makes it "Weird" to you?
no subject
I went to sneak a look at the ones in the stairwell just now. They're just standing there. They didn't try to attack or leave their spot, even when I sent my familiar a little closer.
[She didn't dare test that to see if that'd still stand if she got closer to them herself but it was still weird. After a moment, she also thinks to add:]
Most of their ranks were made up by a type of Shadow I've never seen before, too.
You know how most Shadows look like weird creatures? These ones had longer horns, but their build was more human-like than the others.
no subject
Good work, I'm glad you're on the case.
no subject
She's not sure what to think of Colin yet, but praising her for her efforts goes a long way. It makes Rin feel like she's getting the hang of things, and one step closer to her goal.]
I agree. And I was glad to help.

Hopefully, we can have this mopped up soon.
